Watch General Motors GM Announcement News On November 7 3rd Quarter Earnings 2008 Lost $2.5 billion Videos

General Motors Corp. said Friday it lost $2.5 billion in the third quarter and warned that it could run out of cash in 2009 if the U.S. economic slump continues and it doesnt get government aid.
GM also said it has suspended talks to acquire Chrysler. While it didnt specifically name the automaker, GM said it was setting aside considerations for a "strategic acquisition."

"While the acquisition could potentially have provided significant benefits, the company has concluded that it is more important at the present time to focus on its immediate liquidity challenges and, accordingly, considerations of such a transaction as a near-term priority have been set aside," the companys said in a statement.

The automaker said its cash burn for the quarter accelerated to $6.9 billion, and government aid will be "essential" because of the slow economy and credit crisis.

The move comes hours after Ford Motor Co. said it lost $129 million for its third quarter and will cut about 2,260 more white-collar workers in North America as the industry tries to weather the worst economic downturn in decades. As U.S. and global economies have rapidly deteriorated, auto sales have nearly shut down.

GM said government aid is "essential" to help the U.S. auto industry through the downturn.

Barack Obama will hold his first press conference as president-elect on Friday afternoon, following a meeting with his economic advisory team and facing some fresh and troubling U.S. economic data.

Obama plans to talk to reporters at 230 p.m. Eastern after meeting with advisers including former Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Xerox Chairman and CEO Anne Mulcahy. Billionaire investor Warren Buffett will also participate via speakerphone.

Obama and his advisers huddle Friday amid yet more gloomy news for the U.S. economy. The U.S. labor market shed 651,000 jobs in the past three months, driving the unemployment rate to its highest point in more than 14 years, the Labor Department reported Friday.

A huge crowd in Grant Park in Chicago erupted in jubilation at the news of Obama's victory. By the tens of thousands, they chanted it — some crying, some holding hands to their faces in disbelief, others clutching shivering children they brought along and kept up late to witness a new chapter in this country's history as the first black president strode onto a stage in front of 125,000 cheering supporters and pledged that the fight was not over.

"If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer," President-elect Barack Obama told a crowd that had steadily filled the city's lakefront over the course of the day. "It's the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen, by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different, that their voices could be that difference.

Barack Obama was elected the nation's first black president Tuesday night in a historic triumph that overcame racial barriers as old as America itself.

The son of a black father from Kenya and a white mother from Kansas, the Democratic senator from Illinois sealed his victory by defeating Republican Sen. John McCain in a string of wins in hard-fought battleground states - Ohio, Florida, Virginia and Iowa.

BARACK OBAMA VICTORY SPEECH

I want to thank every American who stood with us over the course of this campaign – through the good days and the bad; from the snows of Cedar Rapids to the sunshine of Sioux Falls. And tonight I also want to thank the men and woman who took this journey with me as fellow candidates for President.

At this defining moment for our nation, we should be proud that our party put forth one of the most talented, qualified field of individuals ever to run for this office. I have not just competed with them as rivals, I have learned from them as friends, as public servants, and as patriots who love America and are willing to work tirelessly to make this country better. They are leaders of this party, and leaders that America will turn to for years to come.

Obama first African-American President of US - 44th president of the united states

Barack Obama was elected the 44th president of the United States, opening a new chapter in the country's history as the first African-American to hold the world's most important job.

``If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer,'' Obama told more than 100,000 people who gathered for a victory celebration in Chicago's Grant Park.

The Illinois senator capped his 21-month quest with a sweeping electoral victory that also enhanced the Democrats' majority in Congress and marked the end of an era of Republican dominance in Washington.

Obama crossed the requisite threshold of 270 electoral votes to defeat Republican rival John McCain last night when television networks projected him winning the state of California. He had at least 338 electoral votes to McCain's 145, according to the Associated Press and television network projections. Six states remained undecided.

Barack Obama seized command of the race for the White House Tuesday night, defeating John McCain in Ohio and Iowa and building a near insurmountable Electoral College advantage in his historic bid to become the first black president. Fellow Democrats gained strength in both houses of Congress.

Obama's Ohio victory denied McCain particularly precious territory. No Republican has ever won the presidency without the state.

The 47-year-old Illinois senator watched returns at a downtown Chicago hotel, then went home to a family dinner after a marathon campaign across 49 states and 21 months.

A jubilant crowd of thousands gathered in Grant Park across town on an unseasonably mild night. Cheers went up each time Obama was announced the winner in another state. The roar was particularly loud when Pennsylvania fell — the Democratic-leaning state where McCain had tried hardest to break through.

Watch Lindsay Lohan Urges Fans to Vote Encourage Americans Election Polls Voting Live Streaming Videos

In the long line of celebrity voting endorsements, Lindsay Lohan has lent her voice to encourage Americans to get out and vote today.

Last night (November 3), the “Mean Girls” actress hit up her MySpace Celebrity blog, writing, “Sorry I haven’t blogged in a minute. I’ve been traveling and trying to catch up on sleep! I thought it was important to just put a message out there tonight for anyone that is on MySpace at the moment.”

She continued, “So, here goes.. I cannot say how important it is for everyone to get out there and vote tomorrow… The future of our country depends on it. Just one vote can make such a difference… Vote - because your thoughts are worth it..VOTE - because YOU can make this country a better place… VOTE - because you can.”

She also urged fans to “vote no” on two pieces of California legislature - Proposition 4 (which would require doctors to notify a parent/guardian before performing an abortion on an underage girl) and Proposition 8 (which would end marriage rights for gay couples).

There is a lot riding on this decision on whether or not to ban gay marriage. Within a few years, we'll be looking back at progressive states like California who realized that same-sex marriage is civil issue. If Proposition 8 passes, it will be a horrible slip backwards for civil rights in the country.

Watch Obama wins New Hampshire Dixville Notch - US Election 2008 Results Online Live Streaming Videos

Obama came up a winner in the first official results announced early on Tuesday from two small towns in New Hampshire, where a tradition of casting the first votes on election day lives on.

The first ballot box in the 2008 US President election has closed, and it’s looking good for Obama, at least with 15 of 21 votes cast in Dixville Notch.

Dixville Notch is a village with a population of approximately 75 in the Dixville township of Coos County, New Hampshire, but is best known as the first place to declare its results during United States presidential elections.

Obama defeated McCain by a count of 15 to 6 in Dixville Notch, and the town of Hart's Location reported 17 votes for the Democrat, 10 for the Republican and two for write-in Ron Paul. Both towns had favored George W Bush in the last two elections.

The rivals, separated by 25 years and a seemingly unbridgeable political gulf, had agreed on one thing during the longest presidential campaign in US history- their promise to slam the door on the era of George W. Bush.

But they were deeply at odds over how to fix the nation's crumbling economy and end the 5 1/2-year war in Iraq, the issues that sent Bush's job approval plummeting to a record low at the end of his 8-year presidency.

Barack Obama leads in vote US presidential Elections Live Results

The major party candidates for president of the United States are campaigning almost non-stop in the final hours before Election Day.

Senator McCain held a town hall meeting in New Hampshire Sunday to stress the differences between himself and Senator Obama, who, campaigning in Ohio, called on supporters to help end what he called divisive politics by electing him president.

Both Democrat Senator Barack Obama and Republican Senator John McCain are focusing on a handful of key states.

They include Pennsylvania and Ohio - neighboring states that could have a big impact on the election.

Barack Obama leads in vote-rich Pennsylvania, but the race is tightening. And that is why John McCain is making last-minute personal appeals to undecided voters in the state, while at the same time seeking to energize his own Republican base.

At a rally in the Philadelphia suburbs, he predicted victory.

"We are a couple of points behind in Pennsylvania," said John McCain. "The pundits have written us off, just like they have done before. My friends, the Mac is back!"

At the same time, his running mate - Alaska Governor Sarah Palin - was campaigning in Ohio where some polls show the race virtually tied. No Republican has ever won the White House without winning Ohio, and the state has voted with the winning presidential candidate in the past 11 presidential elections.

Voting locations - best time to vote - US Presidential election 2008 polls live results online videos

As Election Day approaches, the City of Novi is providing answers to frequently asked questions in an effort to reduce voter confusion at the polls.

Cornelius said voters in precincts six-21 received new voter identification cards in the mail between April and May, and voters in precincts one through five should not be affected.

Voters in precincts three and five were temporarily relocated in the August primary due to construction at Village Oaks and Orchard Hills elementary schools, but will return to their permanent polling locations for Tuesday's election.

All polling locations will be open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Following the August primary pilot of the Electronic Precinct List, each precinct will have equipment to scan voters' driver's licenses and pull their information up on a computer, so election officials don't have to manually verify data on a paper precinct list.

Voters who are in line by 7 p.m. Monday will be allowed to vote absentee. A poll worker will prevent people from joining the line after 7 p.m.

Delaware County voters can vote from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday at the BOE, 140 N. Sandusky St., Delaware.

Fairfield County early voting hours will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at the BOE, 951 Liberty Dr., Lancaster.

Early voting in Licking County will be available 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the BOE, inside the County Administration Building, 20 S. 2nd St., Newark.
